In the palm of my hand

A snapshot of some of our super expensive grocery shopping this week (no generic options, except on the butter, and that was only a 10c difference):

  • $4 for 200g hummus (can’t wait to get a food mixer and make my own, but not happening while we’re here with our claustrophobic, zero-storage space kitchen)
  • $4.90 for 500g butter (on special)
  • $5.20 for cracked pepper
  • $10 for 500g mozzarella (on special)
  • $3.20 for 600ml plain yoghurt (on special)
  • $3 for 125g fresh blueberries

Also, this was the second week in a row that they were out of couscous and asparagus. Budget supermarket or not, that’s just not acceptable! Also also, how can canned veggies (even tomatoes) be closer to $2 than $1? Gah.

Interesting: your food prices are quite similar to what I pay in Canada (1CND = 1.3NZD, roughly). I’m living in one of the more expensive cities along the east coast, but my grocery bill for “basic” items can be just staggering!

Wow the butter’s pricey! I can usually get mine for $2 or $3 (I’m in California).

Have you considered getting a pepper grinder and just getting peppercorns? Unless you don’t really use pepper all that much then I guess its okay.

Argh, I hate too how groceries are just so expensive! 🙁

Wow. I remember those days when grocery shopping was only 1 bag of stuff, now it seems like it’s a carload. Little boys eat a lot.

The butter and cheese is insanely expensive! =O
I usually only pay $2-3 for butter.
And cheese… even nice mozz cheese is about $8.

You guys lacking some cows down there? >_O
    That’s pretty pricey milk products!

[…] Groceries: Yikes, I knew it was a bad one, but sheesh. We’ll see how close to $500 we can get this month (yay short months.) But I’m not sorry! […]

I can’t believe how much food has gone up here in NZ. This weekend a girlfriend and I shopped for one dinner, a couple of snacks, and one $10 bottle of cider, and it came to $50!!! Heinous. And petrol, at $1.99L is only slightly cheaper than milk, at $2.14L… we live in an expensive country!
