The ring thing: Commitment does not equal bling

I do not wear any jewellery. I don’t even have my ears pierced. I take 10 minutes to get ready in the morning (low-maintenance WHAT).

So, I definitely wouldn’t consider myself a girly girl.

Yet for some reason I insisted T needed a ring to propose to me.

I didn’t think about what I would actually do with that ring.

Let me tell you, it took a long time to get remotely used to sporting a new, foreign, object on my hand.

So I totally identified with RINGPOST, who wrote in to A Practical Wedding about how she wasn’t really down with the whole wearing of the ring.

How did I solve this?

Well, I half-ass a few things in life.

Car parking.

House cleaning. (But thanks to my new canister vacuums I think I’ve upgraded to quarter-assing it. What? I spend half the time I use to with these.)

And yes, ring wearing.

I try to remember to put it on most weekday mornings. But I generally skip it on weekends, when we’re often out and about doing more active things, and cleaning the house, and whatnot.

(It’s not that I don’t like the thing. I wasn’t sold on it initially, true, but I warmed to its individuality; it’s not your usual one gem on a plain silver band, and it has a family history – and its shape means it can’t inconveniently snag on anything.)

So yeah, I wear my ring. Just not all the time. It’s probably a 70/30 or so ratio.

How do you feel about wearing your relationship status on your hand? Or, what will you admit to half-assing?

Your ring is really cute, it’s definitely something that I would wear. I usually only wear earrings and rings *once in awhile* when the occasion merits it so I’m thinking that I’d be in the same boat as you when I get engaged

I’m all for a plain gold wedding band – because it’s traditional and people have been symbolising their union with a ring/circle of some sort for thousands of years. But I’m not a fan of engagement rings. I’d rather the money that would normally be spent on a ring go to charity or towards a future house together or something.

But then, I’m not big on weddings either – I’d rather have a small shindig and then have an awesome honeymoon 🙂

Still waiting on the engagement and the ring. I pride myself on not being one of those crazy wedding obsessed girls, but I still do want at least some sort of proposal and a ring. I think I want at least the effort made on his side. I don’t need anything fancy or expensive, but I want something. And I already wear my college ring all the time, so one more ring is okay by me! 😛

I don’t mind wearing my relationship status. As long as my future husband is willing to wear his wedding ring!

This is exactly how I am also. I’m definitely not obsessed, but I would love to wear a ring. I already wear a ton of rings so I’m used to it.

We both half ass it now. I am afraid of losing my ring, or getting it dirty. I also work from home (no makeup, sometimes PJs for 2/3 of the day) so I forget to put it on when I actually leave the house. Abe is really not supposed to wear a ring at his job (danger of getting caught & losing a finger) so he forgets on weekends too.

Doh I hit something wrong on my computer and lost my comment. Anyway, what I was saying is that I’m not a girly girl either and totally do the 10 mins to get ready thing in the morning too! The only jewelry I wear is my wedding ring and I also average about 70% of the time. I usually take it off to sleep, type, clean, cook, and when I have to get my hands dirty.

    Congrats on your engagement! -Sydney

I wear mine daily during the week but often not at all on the weekend (like you). I think I will wear my wedding band ALL THE TIME though because it’s so light and small that it feels like I’m wearing nothing. My e-ring gets in the way sometimes, especially when I’m doing sports!

Thought I’m not a complete girly-girl (it takes me maybe 30 minutes to get ready in the AM) I’ve always worn a ring of some kind on my fingers, so wearing my engagement and wedding rings doesn’t bother me at all and I never take them off, except when I’m doing something where they could get dirty (packing meat, gardening, etc.)

My husband seldom wears his wedding band, but it doesn’t bother me. Because of his work, he’s not allowed to wear it at work, so he never really has the chance to “get used” to it being on his finger. I’ll slide it on his finger during special occasions though (special family gatherings and the like.)

I’m getting married this summer, and we are taking a workshop to make our own rings from raw silver materials. They won’t be super fancy or expensive, but we feel they will hold more emotional value than walking into a jewellery store and picking one.

Sometimes I go for days without wearing my ring, and sometimes I wear it to bed. It just depends. When we get married I’d expect CB to wear his ring though. LOL.

The only time I take off my engagement ring is when I’m doing something like baking when I mix something with my hands (getting dough out of the little crevices is so annoying), or when I was helping my mom out with some gardening. Also if I’m doing something in lab that I REALLY need the protection of my gloves, or it’s REALLY important that I maintain sterile conditions. I’ve worn earrings and a ring or two most days for most of my life, so it only seemed natural to me to wear my rings all the time. I pretty much never take my wedding band off, because it’s very small and it’s a plain band, so there isn’t any issue wearing it, and it’s a little tight, so it’s hard to get off.

My engagement ring does snag on things sometimes though, which is really annoying. Usually doesn’t happen that often, though, but it would happen less with a design like yours!
