Sydney, here I come. What to do, where to go?

So, it looks like I’ll be in Sydney for my birthday next month.

It’ll be my first time in Australia (and indeed the first time I’ve flown anywhere by myself).

The good: I’ll be overseas, in a warmer place, on my birthday. The bad: I’ll be overseas, by myself, on my birthday.

But I reckon I can make it work. I’m a happy wanderer and people watcher, and because it’s a work thing, I’ll only have nights to sightsee. I’ll be there for four nights, as far as I know, three of which are probably good for getting out to enjoy the city.

Any tips on what to see? And where should I go to exchange my NZD into Aussie money?

Happy to take you out if you don’t want to be alone on your birthday. 🙂 What nights will you be around?

Aw, thanks for the offer. Will let you know once details are finalised. Should be flying in on the 6th (my birthday, not sure what time, but laterish in the day) and I think leaving the Tuesday night.

Not sure what to do at night in Syds!! They lock up my favorite place, the royal botanical gardens, for dark, I think. it has a really good view of the bridge and opera house, can you sneak out for lunch for a stroll?

For good night views maybe a night cruise on the harbor? you have to have a good camera to capture the views, though.

Definitely check out The Rocks and Circular Quay, they are great for people watching! Inner Sydney is very walkable but the buses and trams and public transportation are really easy and good, too.

If all else fails, go shopping. 🙂 shopping is really excellent there, leave room in your suitcase on the way over!

Ferry to Manly, Bondi to Bronte walk, Taronga zoo, walk around bridge, some of the great markets like Paddington markets, wander around Surry Hills etc

I’m so jealous. I’ve always wanted to go to Australia but it’s so expensive for flights. I hope you have a good time.

Such a beautiful city! Reminds me of San Francisco in a lot of oblique ways. Been a long time since I was there, though.

Great restaurants. One afternoon, unaccountably free of the husband (why? he must have been napping or something) I wandered into a little shop that had…oh, like a soda fountain. Sat down at the counter and ordered an ice coffee, it being hot outside. Expected to get a glass of black coffee over ice. Out came this AMAZING confection! I think it was mostly cream and maybe ice cream with espresso-like coffee, very good quality. Topped with whipped cream. Turns out that’s what Australians mean by “iced coffee.” 🙂 what a place!!!!
