Leaving on a jet plane

I honestly don’t think this is going to feel real for some time yet.

I guess that’s what happens when you embark on something you’ve never done before, and thus simply can’t fathom.

A new chapter

I’ve always admired and envied the likes of Teacher Finance and Newlyweds on a Budget for their ability to stick to personal finance topics so tightly (I read almost every post on those blogs and shake my fist in disappointment that I didn’t write it first)
But that’s never been me.

This wee blog is evolving and it’s going to chronicle this new chapter, because writing isn’t just a hobby, it’s an essential part of my life.

I’m talking everything from narratives to practical advice and tips to posts where I’ll evaluate and share travel resources. Shoot me questions and ideas! Anything you’d like to hear about, I’ll try to cover. And I’m hoping to also do a few more interviews/features here on the blog – maybe with other long-term travellers, digital nomads, or Kiwis living overseas (as my posts on the differences in life in NZ always garner so much interest).

What kinds would you like to read?

Write about whatever! That’s my philosophy I think! But I love a good audit of wardrobes, pantries, etc. Anything where you get an insight on someone else’s life, I like. Actually I sometimes think, it’s not the content solely, that draws me to the blog, but my ability to identify with the writer. Some blogs are so ‘big’ and ‘impersonal’ or just not ‘me’, I switch off. I haven’t been reading for long, so I don’t want to add too many suggestions to be shot down and told ‘she’s already written about that!’!

I love that you think I stick to personal finance because lately I feel like I’ve been I. A slump and writing more about other things! Hah, but i am SO excited to read about your adventure for reals. I LOVE to travel and while its a dream of mine to travel the world, I know that my need for a steady paycheck would wash away any excitement for the trip. Sooooo I live vicariously through you. Please chronicle everything!

that is soooo exciting! I like to hear about what you think is different, how people do XYZ over there and why you think it is interesting or weird.

I just wanted to say I completely understand the surreal nature of travel you described. I spent about a year saving for a trip to India and I dreaded it whenever people asked me if I was excited. The truth is I wasn’t, because I didn’t know what to expect in the slightest. I need context in order to be excited. I’ve been here for five days and it didn’t sink in until yesterday that I’m in India for a whole.month.

As for content, I only discovered your blog recently and I’m loving your links to posts you wrote years ago. I’m enjoying the mixed bag of material you write. Keep it up.

Write what interests you! If you find it interesting so will we.

    Write about
    A) Whatever interest you
    B) Whatever you’re knowledgable about.
THere are millions of readers online – as long as you cover something you’re familiar with, you’ll find a readership.

To be honest, I’ve enjoyed the sometimes tangential nature of your posts. It offers a more holistic view to personal finance, I think.

Exciting! Personally I like to read about anything and everything! It doesn’t always have to be about PF.

I enjoy reading blogs with a heavy dose of personality and personal stories/experiences. Yes, there is a use for blogs that are more research-oriented and technical in nature, but connecting with other’s experiences is what makes me select to read a post right away, rather than letting the posts accumulate in a queue.

Your travels will ensure that you have some great stories and I’d love to read the observations you have about the places you visit: the general pace of live and prevailing energy/mood of the people, differences in attitudes, and unique encounters. Of course, the stories around meals and food will also be great to read! If you can find a way to get a story or insight from natives of the places you visit, that would be awesome. What do they want others to know about their city/country/culture? What is their favorite food or festival? Why? It would be so cool to read things like that, as well as your own reflections on day to day stuff.

Congrats on the wedding going smoothly, and have wonderful travels!

Can’t wait to read about your travels! Since I’m impatiently waiting to head off on my own trip, reading about other people’s experiences on the road allows me to live the life of travel vicariously. Insight into the places you visit, the people you meet, details on cultures, festivals, food is all super interesting. And I’d say a travel blog is about documenting how you grow as a person on your trip as much as the places you visit. I’m sure whatever you write will be absorbing, the rest of the blog is!

Anything and everything! Places you’ve been. Things you ate. Thoughts. Opinions. Culture shock. Even just pictures. I love hearing about people’s travels. But don’t worry if you’re too tired or too busy to post anything. The faithful followers will wait until your return around the world. 🙂

Just have a safe and fun journey!
And I’ll see you when you’re in Toronto! 😀

Whenever my friends go away on long trips, I give them a small moleskine and fill it with Post-It notes (so I don’t ruin their notebooks) with writing prompts. Whenever you’re lost on what to say, just answer one of these questions:

What’s the coolest thing that’s happened to you this week?
What is one of your favourite memories from your trip so far?
If you could talk to one person today, who would it be? Write out what you would say to them.
What is the last town you visited? What stood out most about it?
What’s the craziest thing that’s happened so far on your trip?
Look at where you are and describe what you see.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? Would you bring anyone with you? Why?
You packed a bag knowing you’d be away for X-many months. What’s the best thing you packed? Is there anything you haven’t touched yet?
What changes have taken place in your life recently?
    What matters to you most?
What’s the first thing you want to do when you get home? Your answer may change throughout your trip.

    Safe travels, friend! xo
