Confessions of a non-shopaholic

By: Nattu

You know it’s time to go shopping when you have recurring dreams about clothes.

I wish I was kidding. I’ve lost count now of the number of times I’ve dreamt about finding new items hidden away in my closet. (Waking up in every case has been surprisingly disappointing.)

I really hate shopping. I tend to buy stuff in bursts – bundle up the pain, I guess. And it’s about time for one of those, since I haven’t bought anything in about a year. Belt-tightening (figuratively) and all that.

It’s embarrassing how many of my clothes are faded, stained, torn or need to be firmly retired to ‘at home’ status only for whatever reasons. I’m 27 this year and badly need to update my wardrobe accordingly.

Where to start? At the minimum:

  • Black pants
  • Jeans (probably one dark and one light/medium)
  • Multiple cardigans
  • At least one long-sleeved top
  • A non-summery skirt
  • More dresses
  • Black boots
  • Neutral flats
  • Swimsuit
  • A handbag
  • And maybe a soft blazer?

I am really not looking forward to this quest. Fashionista friends, put me in your prayers.

Oh, I think you should really update your wardrobe. I only have 2 pair of jeans and I’m planning to buy a new pair of jean this weekend.

So do I. I really need to buy clothes. I don’t even know when was the last time I bought polo shirts. LOL Good luck! That’s a great list by the way. I’ll pray that you get what you need.

i love shopping but I wish I didn’t 🙂 wish I could help you and go shopping with you!!!! I don’t know your NZ brands but for me, Banana Republic in Canada has been doing it for me lately

    Good luck!

Protip: Don’t bring friends on the adventure. They’ll just prolong the pain.
Second protip: If you don’t like the shopping experience in store, give online shopping a whirl; I definitely find it a lot less stressful.

I’m not a huge fan of shopping either but man I could seriously use some new threads myself. Even my shoes are hanging on by a thread!

This is me in a nutshell – before the shopping ban, and even more so now that it’s getting closer to being done. I have worn out so many of my clothing items but have absolutely zero interest in shopping for new stuff. Sending positive shopping vibes your way! Sometimes, it just needs to be done.

I wish I disliked shopping a little bit more. I love it and it gets me in trouble sometimes!

My protip is exactly the opposite of Taylor Lee’s. Every 3-5 years or so I go shopping with a friend who *loves* to shop and I buy 5 years worth of stuff at that point. My current shopping buddy is also amazing with the coupons– we get to the counter and she whips out her pocket book and bam! I’ve just saved $100. (Did this this past November, spent ~$500. It was amazing and now I don’t need to get anything for a long time.)

I so feel your pain! Its like having to shell out a heap of cash to spend the day being insulted by every fitting room mirror. I hope you have a most enjoyable experience and you get everything you need in one trip 🙂

I’ve had really good luck buying jeans at outlet stores lately. There’s a big Lee outlet in Morningside, and I found a couple of good pairs at the North Beach outlet in Westgate.

Get merino cardigans from Country Road either on sale or via Trademe. I have a black one that’s lasted me 5-6 years now and it’s still good as new. I think I paid about $70 for it originally. Worth every cent in the end.

Don’t go to Dressmart, it’s where terrible design and pointless items go to die.

I am not much of a shopper either. I just do the essentials. Thy Cotton On or JJ’s or another decent size store with lots of generic options, and affordable styles.

I feel your pain. I don’t like clothes or shoes shopping. I do tend to do it in bursts due to sales though. =/

Do you have Uniqlo in NZ? I think that they have a lot of super easy basics that are relatively pain-free to shop for. They’re also relatively low priced for good quality. You can probably bang out most of that list there.

I do like to shop, though, and like experimenting with what I wear. But I’ve recently lost a ton of weight(~75ish) pounds and am faced with replacing almost all of my wardrobe as a result. It’s definitely daunting! I find it easier to find things little by little and see how they work before I buy more.

I have never been a huge shopper but I’m even less interested in shopping the older I get. I was just in Europe for 6 weeks and I bought one sweater, and that was because it was cold and I didn’t pack accordingly. Every time my friend wanted to go shopping, I would stand outside the store and wait because it just isn’t fun for me. But it’s quite the struggle to buy new clothes now. I just buy everything online. Makes it a bit easier.

Trade places? I could do with a little less shopping in my life 😛

  • Reply Vanessa March 24, 2015 at 19:32

This is absolutely my life. Maybe once or twice a year I’ll look at my wardrobe and decide to go on a “shopping spree” where I spend hours at the mall, get frustrated, eat my weight in ice cream and end up with a new book.
