Link love (the money-on-my-mind edition)

NZMuse - Link love roundup with awesome reads from the week

Need more cash! Want to buy all the stocks – build my managed funds balance back up (raided this last year to pay off the car) and venture into dividend investing.

Semi-related: I’m so sick of financially secure bloggers who like to go on about how money isn’t important. Also, those of the same ilk who own homes but go on about how great renting is. It’s bad enough when those people have never struggled; it’s kinda worse when they HAVE, and now seem to have forgotten what it was like. Check your dang privilege (and yes, I know the blogging world rewards strong stances over nuance, but this is my space to bitch and moan).

On that note…

My boyfriend came from a less privileged family than I did and he seems to really have forgotten what it was like to not be able to travel whenever one wants and to eat out all the time. He’s the one who had student loans and credit card debt from college and I’m the one who is worried about being broke again some day. I wonder how many of the financial bloggers who say money isn’t important are also people with minimal anxiety. As someone who worries easily, I will probably worry forever and I just can’t always see eye to eye with people who aren’t worriers because they’ll tell me that anything I’m worrying about isn’t important.

I don’t miss renting one bit. Not knowing when your landlord will fix something or whether they’ll raise the rent 10% again this year like they did last year despite not providing any more services. I love homeownership so much and I wish it wasn’t such a privilege so that more people could experience it.

Great point. I’m definitely of the anxious variety. And we’re the same – I’m the one worried about having no money, even though I came from more.

As a now-owner I do get the “I didn’t know how good I had it” feeling about renting sometimes (er, often?). But I totally agree with you that homeownership is such an advantageous privilege to wealth building / symbol of stability that people tend to forget.

Ha, I have had ZERO of those moments. Love owning 200% (even with the bad). Seriously, if renting was so great, those bloggers would be walking the walk now, not just talking the talk.

Particularly in the NZ context, which basically no bloggers understand.

Hey what NZ reading would you recommend for a novice investor? I have a small chunk of money I’d like to grow. Have been putting it in term deposits but wondering if there’s something better I could branch out to.
