  • ISFJ: The power of four letters

isfj - inside an introvert's mind

    Introverted – 83%
    Sensing– 38%
    Feeling– 38%
    Judging – 22%

When you’re a teenager, all you want to do is figure out who you are and to fit in. I could never understand how I could be one person in a certain situation, and act like someone entirely different around another group of people. I felt like I was in a constant state of personality crisis.

I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called, but there was once a website devoted entirely to personality tests and quizzes, and it quickly became one of my favourite time-wasters. I took and retook almost every quiz on that damn website, hoping for a result that would, I don’t know, change my life? Eventually I realised I was far from the only girl on earth who adjusts herself depending on social situations, and, more importantly, that I was who I was.

That said, the Myers-Briggs personality test is generally a good indicator of a person’s traits. Four letters – that’s all it takes. As an ISFJ, I’m part of a group that Wikipedia reckons makes up 9-14 per cent of the population.

Like the ISFJ description suggests, I learn best by visual reinforcement (diagrams, writing things down) or better, by doing. While I was always a pretty good student, tertiary presented more of a challenge for me, and I knew I was never going to be a candidate for grad school (not that it’s really very useful in my field). Conceptual theories and theoretical discussions tire me like nothing else can.

I’ve always thought that the world rewarded extroverts. In the working world, introverts get trampled, passed over. ISFJs hate conflict and confrontation, and don’t do well with criticism – two traits I’ve always, always struggled with (especially the first one, and I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. I know nobody likes fighting, really, but it’s like I regress to childhood and clam up completely in the face of argument).

Obviously, each personality type also comes with its own strengths (hurrah!).

    • The ISFJ feels a strong sense of responsibility and duty. They take their responsibilities very seriously, and can be counted on to follow through
    • Usually good (albeit conservative) at handling money
    • Take their commitments seriously, and seek lifelong relationships (and here I thought that was called “maturity”!)
    • Likely to put others’ needs above their own
    • Excellent memory for details which are important to them
    • Value security, tradition, and peaceful living

What’s your Myers-Briggs personality? I’d especially love to hear from other I-types (at 83%, it’s my strongest tendency of the four preferences); I so rarely encounter other like minds…

  • 7 Deadly Sins – Lust

    Heart

    Image via Wikipedia

    Lust. Seven love secrets.

    1. I do not remember our first kiss, exactly.

    2. Nor do I remember our exact anniversary. The catchphrase has always been, “The Wednesday before Christmas”. I did calculate the exact date last year so we could celebrate five years properly, but it’s already slipped my mind.

    3. I never imagined this relationship would last. I’d just come out of a breakup and I knew T was leaving at the end of the summer, so that’s when I expected it would end.

    4. My language of love is food. If I care about you, I care about making sure you eat. Which is why I was so bewildered back in the hell that was 2009, when he accused me of neglect (or something similar) – what the hell was love if it was not keeping you fed (and watered, clothed and sheltered, and generally keeping things running?)

    5. A surprising number of my dude friends apparently once had a thing for me. Most of which I found out after the fact.

    6. I’ve never been tempted to stray but there is one person I’ve come across who I’ve felt a strange draw toward, who I recently found out is now also spoken for.

    7. I’m sure more of you engage in baby talk than would admit to it, but I bet we could beat you in a competition, hands down.

Day 1 – Pride. Seven great things about yourself.
Day 2 – Envy. Seven things you lack and covet.
Day 3 – Wrath. Seven things that piss you off.
Day 4 – Sloth. Seven things you neglect to do.
Day 5 – Greed. Seven worldly material desires.
Day 6 – Gluttony. Seven guilty pleasures.
Day 7 – Lust. Seven love secrets.

    Gluttony. Seven guilty pleasures.

    1.     Cheese. Of all kinds.

    2.     Anything with cream in it.

    3.   Almost anything with sugar or chocolate in it. Sigh.

    4.     Eating with my hands, when I’m feeling particularly lazy and uncivilised. (I’m not just talking things like chips and dip, either…)

    5. Singing. In the shower. Walking to the bus. Wherever.

    6.     Silly comedies, in the vein of Superbad and The Hangover.

    7. Chilling out in the buff at home. Living without flatmates is awesome.

Perhaps I took the gluttony theme a little too literally, but if you know me at all by now, you know where my heart lies.

  • 7 Deadly Sins – Greed

    Greed. Seven worldly material desires.

    1.     A leather jacket. Soft, buttery brown.

    2.     A lifetime supply of cheese?

    3.   Ooh, and brown boots!

    4.     Um. Two round-the-world tickets for a once-in-a-lifetime trip?

    5.  An acoustic guitar. Why not? My first was an acoustic…my brother now has it.

    6.     A new amp. Mine just lost its overdrive, and I need to get it fixed.

    7. A car that never gives us any trouble. Ever. In fact, make it two as I’ll probably need my own eventually.

This was actually just as hard, if not harder than, Day 1 – Pride. Believe it or not.

  • 7 Deadly Sins – Sloth

    Snorlax

Sloth. Seven things you neglect to do.

    1.     Floss. Never did it growing up, and it’s a habit I can’t pick up.

    2.     Exercise. I try to run twice a week and do a few exercises at home on the floor, but I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always manage it.

    3.     Socialise. A social creature, I am not.

    4.     Drive. We now have an auto, so I really have no excuse. I need to drive more, get my skills and confidence up, and maybe get my full sometime this decade.

    5.     Tidy up. I think I am reasonably clean, but I’m not neat. I leave clothes everywhere and my desk is always a disaster zone. Putting things away is my least favourite chore.

    6.     Smile. I’m not as scowly as I used to be, but I’m far from Little Miss Sunshine…

    7.     Dust. I hate dust; it makes me sneeze. Hence, I hate dusting. But it’s gotta be done, right?

Day 1 – Pride. Seven great things about yourself.
Day 2 – Envy. Seven things you lack and covet.
Day 3 – Wrath. Seven things that piss you off.
Day 4 – Sloth. Seven things you neglect to do.
Day 5 – Greed. Seven worldly material desires.
Day 6 – Gluttony. Seven guilty pleasures.
Day 7 – Lust. Seven love secrets.

  • 7 Deadly Sins –Wrath

Wrath: 7 things that piss me off…

    1.     Slackers. People who don’t pull their weight annoy the hell out of me. It screams incompetence.

    2.     People who retell the same stories over and over. It’s funny, I have a terrible memory, but for some reason, not when it comes to hearing tales of drunkenness, travel, or whatever. I also despise retelling stories, myself. I much prefer telling them once, to everyone who needs to know, as opposed to multiple times for different groups.

    3.     Screwtop jars. They are always way too tight for my weak wrists to wrestle open.

    4.     People who can’t drink sensibly. Or who know their limits, but insist on exceeding them.

    5.     Hobags – gender neutral. I don’t care if you’re male or female, slutting around isn’t cool.

    6.     Slow internet. I live in New Zealand, sadly.

    7.     Being ripped off. Again, I live in New Zealand, so this happens frequently.

  • 7 Deadly Sins – Envy

This is part of a seven part meme! See below for the full list.

Hereby, 7 things that I lack and/or covet:

    1.     Better work hours. Yep.

    2.     A house of my own. Obviously.

    3.     An easy time of it. T and I are entirely self-made. We’ve been entirely on our own since 17. Without sounding self-pitying, and fully realising that we could have had it much worse, and also that I wouldn’t really want to have had helping hands from family, it’s sometimes hard not to envy, uh, everybody else that we know.

    4.     Close friends, SATC style. I know, I know, it’s not realistic. But still. Also, close family. I envy those with big, loud, happy extended families. My kids won’t have pots of cousins to play with or awesome uncles and aunties who dote on them.

    5.     Travel. I know we’ll get there, with diligent savings…but gosh.

    6.     Charisma/ease around people. I’m just not in my element in social situations. And completely out of my depth when a work dimension is part of the mix.

    7.     Better health. Better eyesight, better teeth, better skin, no allergies. I would also like to heal faster and get the flu less than, oh, four times a year? And how about throwing better coordination in there? I am the biggest klutz ever and perpetually bruised.

  • 7 Deadly Sins – Pride

It’s been awhile since I did a meme, and this one’s a goodie! Shoutout is due to Kim – you’re awesome.

    The list goes:

Day 1 – Pride. Seven great things about yourself.
Day 2 – Envy. Seven things you lack and covet.
Day 3 – Wrath. Seven things that piss you off.
Day 4 – Sloth. Seven things you neglect to do.
Day 5 – Greed. Seven worldly material desires.
Day 6 – Gluttony. Seven guilty pleasures.
Day 7 – Lust. Seven love secrets.

Here are 7 things I take pride in:

    1. I care about people. I don’t consider myself a people person at all, in the traditional sense. But I care fiercely about the people in my life. I actually do give a damn – I don’t just give lip service – and will do whatever I can to help them.

    2. I get stuff done. If I say I’m going to do something, then I’m going to do it. Nothing bugs me more than people not following through.

    3. I’m fairly money-savvy. I’m not materialistic and I have a love affair with saving (not that I ever save enough…who does? MORE IS NEVER ENOUGH)

    4. I have never had to worry about my weight. This is really shallow, but yes, it’s something I’m grateful for. I’ve never had to work for this body (I have a fast metabolism and skinny genes, judging by my family). Of course, that didn’t mean I was remotely fit, but I started running last year and am not so heinously out of shape anymore. Also, I have quite shapely legs.

    5. I have a lot of interests. I’m multi-faceted. A jack of all trades rather than a specialist, if you will.

    6. I’m self-driven. I get my motivation from within.

    7. I’m funny, sometimes. Usually in a caustic way.

Dude, that was, really, really, really hard. I think the hardest was going from #1 to coming up with a #2.

  • 50 questions that will free your mind, part 10

(Previous installments can be found here.)

    46. What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?
Wipe my nose on my sleeve in public. No, seriously. I’d sing louder to myself as I walk home from the bus. And maybe enter an air guitar competition. But most likely not.

    47. When was the last time you noticed the sound of your own breathing?
All. The. Time. I’m a naturally heavy breather, as is T. And I often have trouble just breathing through my nose. Especially at night. I always wake up with my mouth open and dry (TMI?) like I’ve been trying to suck in every last bit of air possible. Once, when I was visiting my parents, my mum looked up and asked “Who’s breathing so loud? Do you have asthma or something?”

    48. What do you love? Have any of your recent actions openly expressed this love?
People. Music. Food. I made dinner for T yesterday. What more do you want from me, huh??

    49. In 5 years from now, will you remember what you did yesterday? What about the day before that? Or the day before that?
Errr, like Kara said, a few eventful things have actually happened this week, so quite possibly.

    50. Decisions are being made right now. The question is: Are you making them for yourself, or are you letting others make them for you?
I’m making them. I may hate driving but I like being in the driver’s seat of my own life.

  • 50 questions that will free your mind, part 9

(Previous installments can be found here.)

41 .If you knew that everyone you know was going to die tomorrow, who would you visit today?
My parents. Then as many of my friends as I could manage.

    42. Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous?
I don’t want to be old (says the young person). So yeah, why not? I did used to harbour dreams of being famous, after all. And life is easier when you’re one of the beautiful people.

    43. What is the difference between being alive and truly living?

I think it’s really opening your eyes to what’s around you, appreciating what you have, seeking out opportunities, seizing the day. It’s making the most of what you got, loving like you’ve never loved, doing the things you love to do and everything else be damned.

    44. When is it time to stop calculating risk and rewards, and just go ahead and do what you know is right?
When you’ve got nothing left to lose? Alternatively, when it feels right. When it consumes you. When you just KNOW.

    45. If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make a mistake?
    Because really, who enjoys failure?
