  • A day that’s all about ME

So, August 31 marked the very last day of winter.

Every year, the season feels longer, colder and wetter. We moved to New Zealand because my mother could no longer handle the tropics. I wonder if one day, too, I will uproot my family for warmer pastures. When my bones and sinuses and skin can no longer take it.

I doubt it, because everything that’s important to us is here. But God, a milder winter wouldn’t go amiss. Those of you who endure snow and chains and salt probably want to throw icicles at me. BUT I WASN’T MADE FOR THE COLD.

It also happened to be one of the nicest days in weeks. And the day that I finally felt refreshed and rejuvenated after a ridiculous spell at work. It was a day that put a smile on my face, that gave me hope, that saw me throw open the curtains and consider shaving my legs.

I wanted to eat powdered doughnuts, rolled in brown sugar. So I did.

I went for a stroll/jog around my neighbourhood. I messed around with my camera setting, snapping countless pictures of the cherry blossoms and attracting some strange looks from passersby.

I wanted to read out on the deck, because our little basement flat doesn’t get much sun inside. So I did.

And then me and my guitar sat down to learn this song.

Make a date with yourself. Fill that well. And do it soon. It’s priceless.

  • Our weekend on Waiheke

Last week we escaped the city for the tranquillity of Waiheke – the island known for its beaches and vineyards (pity I detest wine).

    We…

lounged on the beach and went for numerous swims, and a snorkel

…went on little adventures around all the rocks and cliffs at each beach

… did heaps of driving around – I love the fact that you never have to go far before catching a glimpse of the ocean, although some of the best views are now held on private property :S

….enjoyed a spa at the lodge, along with homemade afternoon teas – slices, biscuits, and scones with fresh cream and jam, not to mention fresh muffins every morning

….ate breakfast for lunch, along with a very pretty flat white, at the Lazy Lounge cafe

…had fish and chips for dinner on the beach, where a seagull proceeded to crap on me
…made a new friend, Tom (aka T’s brother’s GPS, who proved invaluable in getting around the island) …saw an old, naked guy on the beach
… used a longdrop public toilet
…watched Up, which had us both in tears
… and finally, I read A Disobedient Girl by Ru Freeman. Beautifully written and absolutely heartbreaking. Worth a read.

Cost: $365 for two nights at Punga Lodge – HIGHLY recommend it – including breakfasts and afternoon teas.

Just under $140 for all our other meals and snacks (two lunches, three dinners) plus an overpriced tube of sunblock ($20!!!)

And approximately $30, or a half tank of gas.

I don’t think I’ve ever come back from holiday feeling so good about the cost!

  • Around my ‘hood

I’ve been fighting off what feels kind of like the flu all week. Today I caved. It’s my first sick day in probably six months (I might start keeping a log – I’m not one to cry wolf at the first sign of the sniffles, but if there’s a bug going around, odds are I’ll catch it sooner rather than later. I wonder if I actually use up all the sick days I accrue – do you?)

Anyway. Here’s yesterday’s outfit – I’ve been lying comatose most of today in my robe, something I have neither the energy nor desire to document.

And for your viewing pleasure, some photos of the beach down the end of my street. It’s not clear, blue and sandy like the ones out east or north, or wild and surfy like the ones way out west, but it’s my beach 😛
