Friday Five: These are my confessions

these are my confessions

  • I don’t care for the arts. I like rock music and photography and movies. I don’t care much for art, sculpture, theatre, museums. Buffy is probably my favourite telly show ever. If given the choice between a free orchestral concert in the park or staying in with my guitar and YouTube, the latter would win every time. Call me a Philistine.
  • I know feminism is about choice. I believe choosing homemaking is just as valid as choosing a career. But aΒ tiny part of me is disappointed when I hear you changed your name after marriage. (Logical or not!) Which is every single person I know who is a newly-wed or newly-engaged or heck, even just in a LT relationship but already planning the wedding – most recently, a coworker who had a really cool surname, but no longer.
  • I don’t actually know how to clean a toilet or an oven. These strike me as vital adult skills to have, but I’ve always just made it up as I go along.
  • I know I should spend my free time – and my downtime at work – reading about my industry, furthering my education, bettering myself. But I don’t. And I don’t really want to. I read personal blogs and novels, learn 80s and 90s rock songs, bake artery-clogging munchies and watch movies.
  • I have a bit of an obsession with food. I need to have my lunches mapped out for days and little things like forgetting to take the chicken out of the freezer to defrost before dinner completely mess with my day. I’m pretty sure I spend as much time thinking about food as men apparently think about sex. And when it comes to things like salsa flavoured cornchips, I cannot stop until the bag is empty. Gluttony is my biggest weakness.

Your turn…?

I think that I think about sex like men think about sex. But food? Sometimes I straight up forget to eat.

I’m with you on the change of last name part. I also believe that feminism is about choice, but it really disappoints me when my smart, independent (until they find a man) and egalitarian girl friends find a man, and then it’s all about the man. One of my girlfriends openly admitted to me that she thinks that once she has a family, that’s going to be the more important consideration and she will no longer actively try to keep up her friendship with her non-married friends. Sure, it’s a choice that these women make, and they be able to choose to do whatever with their lives. I just think it’s a rotten one.

I completely agree with you regarding art! It makes me feel like an uncultured dummy to say so, but it’s true: I just don’t care about art. I don’t GET art. Music, I love. Photography, I have mixed feelings about. I prefer pictures of people to things, but specifically hate pictures that look like they’re the result of a well-timed, well-planned and well-executed photo shoot. Fiction? Love it. Can not possibly read enough. Poetry? HATE IT. Abstract art? HATE IT. Plays? HATE THEM.

And here’s why: with poetry and abstract art, I always feel like the artist is trying to tell me a secret – usually one involving their feelings – in a round about way, and it makes me really uncomfortable. I think what what it boils down to is that I’m far to literal a person to understand or appreciate the symbolism or secrecy of these two types of art.

Likewise, I don’t like plays and other types of performing arts because they involve people pretending to be someone other than who they are, and I have a really, really, REALLY hard time with suspension of disbelief.

For the same reason, I am absolute CRAP when it comes to participating in simulations in the workplace. I just can not fake anything.

Confession: I think it’s RIDICULOUS the lengths women will go to hyphenate their names these days. If it results in a 20 letter+ last name, just don’t do it.

I’m totally planning on changing my name after I get married πŸ™‚

Oh, and I’m TOTALLY on board with number 4. I can’t get through a marketing book if my life depended on it. I’m much more interested in reading blogs and reading about personal nutrition/fitness!

  • Reply Lesley March 4, 2011 at 09:34

    1. I have no artistic ability and don’t understand what makes something “art” and something else a pile of junk. Love BTVS.

    2. If I get married, I’m kind of looking forward to changing my last name. I’m not a big fan of my own.

    3. I’ve conquered the toilet… mostly.. but I haven’t touched my oven yet. I was very sad to find out that “self-cleaning” ovens don’t actually clean themselves.

    4. I am always reading something in my downtime.

    5. I’m not that interested in food. A $5 meal at a fast food restaurant tastes about the same as a $20+ meal at a classier food establishment…

    Happy Friday. ~Lesley

    I’m with Amber. Really.

I can’t wait to change my last name. I hate my last name and my new one will be sooooo much better.

I’m obsessed with food too. I love it.

  • Reply youngandthrifty March 4, 2011 at 12:37

Oooh so it’s not just me πŸ™‚ I am so bad at remembering to take things out of the freezer to defrost. That was what happened with the lemon grass chicken I made the other night- forgot to defrost chicken, it turned an ugly shade of yellow-brown when I defrosted it in the microwave and it put me into a funk.

    Thanks for sharing your confessions!

I’m never changing my last name. My kids can have his last name, whatever, but my last name is my last name.

And I too am a glutton. And I spend a huge amount of time thinking about food. Today on my way home from work it was all I could contemplate and when people interfere with my food plans (i.e. roommates not washing knives/pots I need to use, people canceling restaurant plans we had, grocery store being out of what I want) I seriously hate hate hate them.

  • Reply Stephany March 4, 2011 at 15:16

I hate, hate, hate my last name. HATE IT. It’s extremely German and I also have no connection to it. I don’t have any contact with my father and no contact with my paternal side of my family. I would actually really like to change my last name to my mother’s maiden name.

I think changing your last name is SUCH a personal decision. I don’t think it makes you any less of a feminist whether or not you change because feminism is more about women having the ability to choose. Choose to work or not, choose to have children or not, choose to keep or change your last name. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine not changing my last name to my husband’s. I think it’s exciting to think of me having his name.

But that’s just me. For others, changing their last name is something they would never even consider. And that’s OK! That’s the great part about it – we have our own ability to choose.

Anyway I am with ya on gluttony. I can finish a bag of white cheddar popcorn in 10 mins no joke… or salt and vinegar pop chips.

I didn’t change my last name when I married because I was just too lazy to go through changing all the paperwork; driver’s license, social security card, etc. Thankfully my husband didn’t care and liked my surname, so there was no pressure there.

    As for my confessions:
I can’t cook worth beans. I’m a complete disaster in the kitchen. Thank goodness there’s cold cereal (I can pour milk and cereal into a bowl without making a huge mess. πŸ˜‰ )

  • Reply Funny about Money March 5, 2011 at 10:23

wai.wai.wai.wai.WAIT! Rock, photography, & movies are the arts. A person can love one variant but not have to wallow in all of them. πŸ˜‰

LOL! Long may you thrive on salsa-flavored chips, and even longer may you never have to clean an oven!

Mine: I changed my name when I married because my husband’s last name (spelled with three letters) was ever so much better than my father’s clunky Belgian-by-way-of-Arkansas name. And why should I have to keep my father’s name, when my mother’s French maiden name was so much more aesthetic, anyway? And wouldn’t my father’s feelings be hurt (to say nothing of my then-young husband’s) if I took it upon myself to dump his name and take on her father’s?

When I divorced I kept my ex’s name because three letters are easier to combine and easier to pronounce than eight, and so that it would be the same as my offpsring’s.

I couldn’t wait to change my last name to one that people could spell and pronounce. I had no feminist ties to it. The most outspoken feminists I know have no problem having their husbands take care of them. Feminism to me is more about actions and less about talking of inequality.

I hardly speak of feminism, but I feel like I’m one of the most feminist people I know. I went to school to be an engineer and have done pretty well despite the fact that it’s a male dominated field. I married a great guy that’s also not afraid to do laundry or change a diaper. If that’s not equality, I don’t know what is. Wow..this topic struck a cord. I just hate double standards and outspoken feminists wannabees are some of the worst offenders.

PS. I love Buffy. That show is incredibly well written. If you notice, they tend to take normal teen issues and exaggerate them with monsters. Like when buffy slept with angel and he “changed”…how many people can say that about an ex. Just Brilliant. I hope that wasn’t the peak of Joss Whedon’s career.

I judge people. They say we’re not supposed to do it, but I do it. And I believe other people do it too. And those who say they don’t are just lying. See? I already judged non-judging people as liars…

    1. I had my entire name legally changed. I don’t feel bad about changing it because it was such a horrendous name. My life has been easier since I changed it. People perceive certain names to be better and judge people on certain names. I now wish I had it done at 18 instead of like 25.

I love my parents but I don’t care what they think especially because it was such an ugly name. I’m *never* changing my name not even if I get married. I went through a lot to change it and it had to be approved by a judge so I’m keeping this one. I think everyone deserves to have a beautiful name.

    2. I don’t like college. Yes I know its supposed to make you well educated, well rounded, and prepare you for the working world but most of the classes they make you take are so boring and the textbooks are so dry.

I only went back to college in my late twenties because I wanted better work opportunities. I only like learning things I like and not about things like algebra (ugh). Most people don’t even use algebra after college.

    3. I had a nose job, dental veneers, and lasik and I don’t regret it. I feel better about myself since I did these things and I don’t think its “superficial” – its not any different from losing weight, doing your hair, and finding nice clothes that fit.

Doing this has helped me be more confident in talking to others because we live in a visual world. No regrets but I won’t be having any more work done. At some point you have to say “enough” and my nose job is the only plastic surgery I ever wanted.

    4. I think selfishness is a virtue, I only want to live how I want to live. I got tired of doing things just to make parents, friends, teachers happy. So now I do whatever I want and live life how I want. I am an objectivist.

    5. I don’t like to keep busy, they say you should keep busy so you can lead a good life but I like doing whatever I want whenever I want. I’d love to retire early and lead a leisure lifestyle where I don’t have any obligations to work or to “good causes” just because I “should” such as volunteering. πŸ˜‰
