Friday Five: Social media peeves

It’s been a little while (too long?) since I last got my rant on.

Here are a few things that are getting up my nose (I’ve been saving these up):

  • People sending me random LinkedIn connection requests. I’ve been getting quite a few from people I share connections with but don’t directly know and have never met or dealt with. If you think connecting could be mutually useful, then let me know why you think it would be beneficial! Otherwise your generic message is going into LinkedIn purgatory.
  • People who, when tweeting their own posts out, include “via @[ownusernamehere]” at the end of the tweet. I get why you do it – in case people RT it, you want your handle included. But this is just WEIRD. Sorry.
  • People who clog up my timeline with their frequent tweets namedropping all their new followers, ostensibly to thank them. ANNOYING. I may end up unfollowing them. Personally, if I start following someone, seeing a tweet like this would annoy me far more than it would make me feel, I dunno, special. Maybe that’s just me.
  • People whose Twitter streams are basically just a flood of headlines, links and Twitter usernames. It’s nice that you’re showing love to other bloggers’ posts, but Twitter is Twitter, and RSS feeds are RSS feeds. Show some personality! (If that’s what yours looks like, that’s quite possibly why I didn’t follow you back.)
  • People who laboriously thank everyone in a post who linked to one of their blog posts that week. Again, I get that it’s all in the name of reciprocation. But it’s tiresome.

Phew! That feels better. Now, onto the weekend! Feel free to vent away yourselves in the comments.

I’m guilty of having my name is a tweet of a post of my own. It’s only because I click on the tweet button on the bottom of my posts, and they automatically include my handle. And then I’m too lazy to delete it sometimes.

    Sorry don’t hate me! 🙂

The via @name is a default for most sharing sites. The worst is when people don’t change the default away from @wordpress and such! That one doesn’t bother me at all. I much prefer people who use twitter to communicate, not just constantly tweet links. Especially annoying the the giveaways all the time folks.

Agreed! I am all for personality. I want to know that I am following real people and not robo-tweets (just invented this word so give me a slack.:))

I have stopped following people because they only posted links to other people’s blogs. I have stopped reading a website because there are too many “link love” posts. I don’t need 25 links to more of the same pf articles and I don’t care who linked to you recently.

YES to #4! I hate it when I follow someone only to figure out quickly that they just retweet and post links to and of anything. And the “Thanks for the follow!” mentions are annoying as well. And who ACTUALLY follows the people who do #FF? (Although I’ll admit that I used to tweet my own #FF’s)

I am guilty of having my name on some of my tweets. The tweetmeme plugin I have adds the name and I tweet from within my post. I should remember to remove them.

I have to understand twitter better. Right now, it does look like a robot account. But I have not understood how to start a conversation (I imagine that as a real conversation and me talking randomly to the room with no one listening make me feel really weird). Same deal with jumping in on a conversation, I am not able to shake the fact that it is rude to jump in 🙁 I really need to read a book or something on twitter.

Haha, I can completely understand – it took me a while to get into Twitter, but I wouldn’t worry about reading ‘how’ to do it (though if you want a rundown of the basics – the tech and the etiquette – there are plenty of blog posts out there). Just give it a go – nobody is an expert. Just experiment – and try not to worry about being ‘rude’ by jumping in – it’s totally normal! Don’t be afraid to respond to people’s tweets with comments of your own. That’s how it all starts.

I’ve been getting LinkedIn requests from totally random arsed people who seem to have zero relevance to my field or interest. And then I get them to my blog account where I don’t even have a LI account. SMH. Why would I accept those? It’s not about popularity…

I’ve never understood the new followers thing. I thought the “thank you for following” part was reflected by your follow back? Sometimes I follow people back, sometimes I don’t, but I never thank them. Glad I’m not the only one!

Ugh, I hope you don’t mean automated DM (direct messages) thanks yous. That’s the worst Twitter sin of all.
