What’s inside my closet

I set myself a goal at the start of the year: no clothing or beauty purchases in 2012, except in the case of an emergency (ie shoes, because I have so few of them, that need replacing. One of my flats has actually already given up on me, but I’m getting by without).

That finally spurred me on to do something that’s been on my list for aaaages: a visual catalogue of my wardrobe.

While shooting every item (which took me weeks, to be quite honest – hence the changing lighting) it felt like I had way more garments than I should.

Upon putting them all into spreads, though, it started to feel like i should have MORE clothing.

Jackets, etc

Cardis

Tops

Shorts

Pants

Skirts

Dresses

Without counting underwear, PJs and the oversized band shirts I slob around in at home/sleep in, that’s 97 garments.

13 jackets – two long sleeved tops, three hoodies, two blazers, a denim jacket, cropped jacket, waterproof jacket, long cardi and two coats.

10 cardigans – three cropped cardis, two open cardis, five regular ones

32 tops – three dressy tops, 11 casual, six work tops,12 nice tops

7 pairs of shorts – two office-appropriate pairs, two pairs of board shorts, one pair of denim shorts and my running shorts

13 pairs of pants – five pairs of jeans, one pair of exercise pants, two stripey pairs, three plain pairs and two pairs of blingy black pants

9 skirts – two denim, one dressy, two long, one that’s a bit too cutesy and three summery ones.

13 dresses – four formal, four casual, two black work dresses, and three that straddle categories.

I’m happy with what’s there, which is why I set myself this challenge. My wardrobe is finally starting to reflect me: colours I love, clean lines, a few nice things but mostly unfussy.

Have you ever done a tally of your wardrobe?

Wow! I don’t have the patience to do that wardrobe catalog right now. I think I love your jean collection and that white dress is awesome!!

I love that dress. Wore it to my year 13 ball. I’d totally wear it as my wedding dress if it came down to it.

At last count, I had 37 dresses and 11 work skirts. I pretty much don’t own pants…a few pairs of jeans, one black pair of suit pants and one grey pair of slacks. I have a large number of tops though, which really, are kind of superfluous considering that I tend to prefer to wear dresses with a cardigan or jacket. I’d be up around the 150-200 mark of items of clothing. I’m comfortable with that.

That’s such a great idea! I have so many clothes and little patience.. doing that would take me months. and months. But I should, just so when I have the urge to go shopping, I can look at all that I have. Haha!

Wow what a great idea! I need to stop being lazy and do this.

I love all of your dresses :).

Using your criteria, I have 24 items
    6 Jackets/sweatshirts
    2 Cardigans
    6 Tops
    1 pair of Pants
    1 pair of Shorts
    1 Skirt
    7 Dresses

With underwear/accessories/jewellry/shoes the number is around 95, I think.

When you move a lot, you sort of have a mental tally running all the time. When you have tiny wardrobe like I do now, you also have a mental tally. (If I buy something new, I almost need to get rid of something that’s too old. Which is good.)

You have a lot of pants, hehe. I have four pairs, two of which are work pairs. I probably have more dresses than you do though. Living in hot climates makes that more likely, I suppose.

Hmmm after moving to a new wardrobe and getting rid of a bunch of clothing I don’t really have much excess! I’m realizing this because I haven’t done laundry in two weeks and I have NOTHING left to wear… lol, well aside from dresses and shorts but it’s too cold for that still. What a great idea to do this, also I’m glad I’m not the only one that has several jackets and coats. Sometimes I feel guilty ;o

You NEED multiple jackets/coats! What do you do when some are wet from the nonstop rain/in the wash? 🙂
