I would pay good money to get some stability in my life. Unfortunately, some things you just can’t buy. And the universe seems to enjoy pissing on me lately.
There’s some things you CAN buy though – or at least, that you should be able to. But I cannot find these anywhere in Auckland either!
Banh mi
Latest letdown: Viet Sandwich. I know there are still a couple more banh mi spots I haven’t hit up yet, but to be honest, I’ve hit all the ‘top’ ones that have been most recommended. With the closure of Mi Vietnamese, District 5 is probably my pick of the bunch right now.
Napoli pizza
Quite frankly, Sette Bello is just about as good as Dante’s (which in turn isn’t quite meeting my standards) and is both cheaper and more convenient to boot.
Burritos
Big, fat, juicy American burritos. Augh. Mad Mex gets pretty close, I suppose (but you need to pick the right filling). Everyone raves about Flying Burrito Brothers, but I went there on the weekend of my birthday and it was bland and expensive.
Black cardigan
I just want a nice, fitted, plain black cardi. Slim, not chunky. Not made of acrylic or polyester or other nasty crap. No frills, no fuss. Apparently this is asking too much. These cardis just aren’t in this season?
Black flats
Pretty much the same story here. I mean, there are some options, but I think it’s outrageous to charge close to $100 for a pair of ballet flats that aren’t even leather. The prices in NZ!
So that’s my Wednesday whinge. Feel free to get stuff off your chest too.
I need to find some good mid-tier work clothes for very petite women since apparently the new corporate overlords dress a lot sharper than I or anyone in my office does. Also, because, it’d be nice to skip the tailor for once.
I really wanted to buy a power button on my phone! I have been looking for this one for almost a month, I also called some of my friends, but unfortunately I only need to order it on Amazon and they can’t ship it to my country. 🙁
Tried Zambrero? It’s pretty good, even by American standards. I love their basilo sauce.

Yeah not a big fan of Zambrero either.
I hear ya. I want freshly steamed NZ mussels. 🙁
I love cardigans and my go-to source in the US is Lands’ End (landsend.com). They always have simple cotton cardigans. It looks like they ship to NZ. I’m not sure if you’ll find it too expensive, but I can vouch for the high quality of their clothing. I have a simple black cardi I bought from them at least six years ago that still looks good.
Hope you have some good things moving your way soon.
Sorry to hear about your food problems. When we moved from Seattle to Phoenix, we realized we’d left the land of bountiful, delicious Asian food to one of occasional mediocre stuff. Over the last 4 years, we’ve managed to find three decent Thai restaurants. Two of them are 10 miles or more away. Sigh.
I don’t have any particular wardrobe desires. I try to avoid checking out fashion to avoid the wants. A couple of weeks before FinCon I’ll check out some affordable stores to see if I can add at least one new shirt to the mix.
Oh, and before FinCon I need to find a pair of black shoes that don’t kill my feet in humidity. The last, incredibly adorable pair I bought cut into my ankle in St. Louis. I actually had a sore spot when I got back home. In New Orleans, the blisters from wearing them once meant I had to wear flats the rest of the conference.
So I guess my desire is for cute black shoes that won’t kill my feet — for $40 or less. Even $40 will be hard for me to rationalize.
My last, best merino cardigan was from Glassons. it has lasted astoundingly well for something from Glassons. Fitted black cardigans are like gold when you find a good one. I have found nothing this season in Australia either.
Came back to say, have you checked corporate uniform suppliers for cardigans? You might have to order on-line, but I have a couple of cardigans my sister got when she was a nurse that have survived very well.
Hi there,
For cardigans I have found Glassons to be pretty decent. I have a few cardigans from there and wear them regularly. They are in NZ too so you could check them out if you haven’t already.
I hear you about the ballet flats. I have been looking for nice, affordable, nude flats for ages, but no luck. They are expensive here in Australia too just like everything else!
Been looking for Napoli pizza in the area. I am freakin excited to have a taste of it.
