Going paperless

I can safely say that the majority of the mail I get consists of bank statements. I chuck them on my desk and at the end of the month, file them away. (I’m getting better, I promise: I used to do it even less frequently! But in an effort to simplify and declutter, I’ve reorganised my desk and filing system).

But I’ve been thinking: Should I stop my paper statements? I do all my banking online and don’t actually read the physical copies, because I’ve already seen it all. I keep them more for my records and in case I ever need to check something out – I’ve been told my bank only stores electronic statements for 12 to 18 months.

What do you think? Do you still receive statements in the mail? And what if you need to confirm a transaction from, say, two years ago?

    I’m paperless with ALL my bills, BUT I do print the first page of each bill for my records. I find that when it comes in the mail it comes with like five sheets of paper plus the envelope. I only print the first sheet that says the amount and invoice # on it.

    But, no, I have never had to go back through my bills. It’s mostly for when I do my taxes since I’m contract worker.

    paperless is AWESOME. kiwibank sends me a .pdf of my statement every month, which, like you, I’ve seen it all before so I don’t even look at it.

    Instead of physically filing the statement away, I move that email message to a special folder in my email inbox, and if I ever need to see it again, I look in that folder. Same idea, slightly different process. 🙂

    I’m paperless. I just assume if I really really need a transaction from two years ago… too bad.

    But I’m lax paper keeper, probably to a fault.

    You can always store them digitally.

    I get mostly everything in the mail, but I pay electronically. I just like having the paper reminder right there. I know it’s kind of a waste.

    Yep, I am paperless too. I always save them as a PDF and that way they are accessible later if necessary. I would check with all of your bill collectors and banks to see how long they stay online. Personally I cannot stand to have paper laying around… and love getting mails without bills!
