How do you fit in exercise?

It’s easy to slack off in winter. Now that it’s not pitch black when I leave work, I’m hopeful soon I can start jogging home a couple of times a week. I’m not sure how much higher my odds are of being a victim of crime in the dark…but I just don’t like the dark, full stop. Nor the cold.

It was definitely easier finding time to run when I didn’t work 9-5. Here are three ways I’m trying to get more movement into my life”

At home: I used to do crunches religiously in high school at one point while watching TV. Nowadays I’m more likely to lounge in bed while watching movies or Bones, cuddling with T. Really, I could be using *some* of that time to practice either finger exercises or doing situps. I’ve also started doing them first thing in the morning, mainly to warm myself up in the chilly air (a flatter stomach will just be a bonus).

At work: At first it annoyed me how far away my desk is from the kitchen and bathroom. Now I see it as a pro. Also, there are stairs in between. Do you have stairs? Take them! Faster! (Okay, it’s probably easier if you’re a child at heart and like to leap up them; it’s also hard to take three steps at a time if you’re in heels). I’m also really restless, so if you’re a fidgeter too, perhaps it’s not a bad thing – even if it annoys everybody else.

In between: I walk to work when I can, and go out for walks at lunch sometimes. Not everyday, sadly.

How about you? Any sneaky tips?

My best strategy is the one that worked! The one that worked for me was getting up earlier (5:30 AM) and went running for 35 minutes. I needed to leave for work by 6:30 AM, I had just enough time to have breakfast and shower. I found that doing this early started my day off well. By the time I got home, I was always too tired to do it. Another choice may be during lunch. I did that a number of years ago too.

I schedule mine in, I’m a huuuuuge list maker so I’ve just added it to the must’do parts of my planner… works okay, I feel like I have to get it done and I usually enjoy it once I’m there. Scheduling it in lets me overcome the excused that the couch is so comfortable… lol

I really love exercise and would go crazy without my daily sweat sessions so I MAKE room for it in my schedule by getting up early in the morning usually 🙂

For me, I practice karate with a group of people that I really like. The people help a lot.

Also, my boyfriend and I enjoy exercising together, and we encourage each other along so that we both do it. I don’t think that I’d enjoy exercise half as much if I were the only one sharing in the glory – exercise is hard! So much easier to just slack off and read stuff.

I’m missing exercise like crazy! I’ve been stuck on crutches for the past 6 weeks due to an exercise inflicted injury and I’m going crazy!

When I’m not hobbling I find that doing exercise as a group makes you so much more motivated. Being disciplined helps too- sometimes it’s all too easy just to head straight home rather than making a detour via the gym. I’ll also be cycling to work after I’ve had surgery on my knee 🙁

I always walk to and from work (a brisk 20 minute walk each way). I take the stairs to and from work as well (2 flights). I also walk to most places as I live downtown and most places are walking distance. That’s it. I find that for me to look and feel good, eating well is becoming more and more important. So while I do a pretty lax exercise routine, if you can even call it that, eating well has had a huge impact as well.

Your post reminded me that I should do some crunches in front of the TV. I have a rubber tire and a half that I can do without. And who doesn’t want a flatter stomach? :p

I had to give up my treadmill when I moved into my current place; it’s the top floor of a triplex so it wouldn’t have been the best for neighbourly relations, lol! But it IS on the third floor, which means lots of stairs every day, which I think definitely helps!

I also partake in the lunch break walks when the weather permits. I keep a pair of Fit Flops in my office for walking, they make me feel like I’m getting more of a workout. I miss stairs, I don’t encounter very many of them where I live and work.
