My eating habits have gone to hell in a handbasket lately.
I don’t know about you, but when things get busy, my diet suffers. You’re short on time, so you end up eating toast and noodles and things that are quick and easy. Or you end up buying food and blowing your budget as well.
A couple of other things are also contributing factors:
Every Friday afternoon is social club time at the office. My usual MO is to fill up on bread, cheese and salami. But lately, I’ve been gravitating toward the chips (if there’s one thing I have no control around, it is chips of any kind – potato, corn, whatever) and Coke (even though a can is too much for me in one go). The new organisers have also started getting more delicious things like Tim Tams and raspberry slices, further testing my restraint.
T doesn’t usually eat breakfast, and he starts work at 6am on weekdays anyway. Weekends are our time to ease into the day, waking up slowly and then having a leisurely breakfast. Unlike me, he’s not a cereal or toast guy. He’s not even really a pancake kind guy (?!?!). So it’s usually about a full on cooked meal, or lately, a bakery run. So good, but so bad.
So that’s my foodie confession for the week. At least there’s only one way from here: up. Right?
Me and the BF are pretty bad for the weekend breakfasts. I don’t if it’s because it’s the weekend and we think we deserve a little treat for just making it through another week, but it’s definitely something we need to cut back on.
I feel ya on trying to eat healthy. There’s always food at work, mainly sweets, and it’s hard to say no!
Those Tim Tams sound irresistible! I had to look them up to find out what they are. “A Tim Tam is composed of two layers of chocolate malted biscuit, separated by a light chocolate cream filling, and coated in a thin layer of textured chocolate.” OMG! I love anything chocolate and malted. I’m going to have to look for them in the U.S. Apparently they are available only between October and March each year. I may be cursing you in a few months if I find them as yummy as they sound.
They are pretty damn good. Original is the best, but there’s all manner of different flavour variations! Weird that they’re only available seasonally.
I miss Tim Tams so much.
I hear ya on struggling to eat healthily, though. For me, it’s a money and time thing. Although I am writing up this week’s grocery list and attempting to meal plan, which will hopefully mean a healthier diet this week!
I also have a weakness for any sort of chip. We are trying so hard not to buy them, but it’s tough. It’s also really hard when the vendor start sending chocolate and toffee to our office. I’m trying to be good, but we’ll see.
We can’t all be 100% on our game, 100% of the time. Enjoy the food and just do an extra situp or two. Because you’re worth it.
I JUST tried a TimTam I’d been hoarding in the cupboard from lord knows when. I approve! Of course, I have no idea when I will next get one…
I’ve been eating candy, 3 to 5 mini packs at a time these past several days. Just because I feel like it and because I’ve been hoarding them for so long they’re pretty much going to go off if I don’t eat them. And cooking with butter for a couple weeks. That’s unusual too, I don’t normally use butter in recipes. But it’ll even out soon I imagine. I think that’s why I blog about food more, just so I have different recipes to hand at and at the forefront of my mind rather than get into any single rut for too long. That’s the “balance” that’s easiest to manage, in addition to trying for: meat, starch, veg per plate.
According to Wikipedia, Tim Tams are available at Target stores from October through March each year. They’re packaged under the Pepperidge Farm brand. I don’t shop at Target very often, but I think I’ll try to find them just to try.
And, Revanche, don’t be hard on yourself about cooking with butter. I started loosening up my constraints around fats and found that I was still losing weight (with some exercise and heavy veggie consumption, too). There seems to be some evidence that fat — especially saturated fat — is not the “enemy” that we’ve been told it is for the past umpteen years. Better to stay away from sugar, artificial sweeteners, and grain-based carbohydrates if you’re trying to lose or maintain weight. It’s been working for me, but I know every body is different.
I’m still going to get my hands on some of those Tim Tams, though! 😉
This is a difficult time to focus on eating healthy when you’ve got so many family get togethers and dinners to look forward to. Stay strong!
I usually aim for the 80/20 rule. I eat healthy and within portion 80% of the time and let loose the other 20. It has worked well for me staying at my ideal weight.
I’m doing my best to avoid holiday parties because I have no self-control around that stuff either. Cheese….good lord, my weakness! I never met a cheese I didn’t like. I hear ya sister!
Well, we all have our weak moments when it comes to our diet. For me, breakfast is the easiest to control, and I almost always eat heathy. HOWEVER, when work gets busy, my lunches are often the opposite of my breakfasts, and I give in to food temptations way too much. Keep me busy, and it’s tougher for me…but if I’m not super busy, it gets way easier to make excellent choices. It’s always interesting how people handle such situations.

Then up again.
Then down again.
But eventually the frequency decreases and before you know it you can make it through an entire week without eating too much junk.
Without needing proof, I forsee this holiday killing my weightloss plans while stretching my budget. 🙁
