In which I show my princess colours

These holidays I’m republishing some old posts that newer readers might have missed first time around. Enjoy!

I’ve always thanked my lucky stars that I have no food allergies, nor do I have any specific dietary requirements. That makes things a lot easier in the E/T household. We eat together and we generally eat the same things – no separate meals required.

The only thing is, I’m getting a lot pickier. I’m getting a bit more high-maintenance. As in, I cannot bring myself to eat cheap tuna (it’s mushy, watery and generally foul). Cheap ice cream tastes less like dairy and more like fake to me. And I’ve always been selective about the kinds of meat I eat, but these days I’m a total gourmet diva when it comes to choosing cuts. Sadly, our budget doesn’t stretch to rib eye or T-bone. It barely stretches to beef mince, the way things are going.

I definitely don’t plan on starting to cook separately, but I do think certain meals are going to take a little more thought (either that or I’ll just eat more breakfast for dinner). If he wants marinated tenderised steak (the kind that comes in $20 packs) or ribs, or pork, then I’ll have a tiny piece with tons of veggies.

Have your tastes grown more discerning with age? Ever have dining clashes with your housemates?

My boyfriend and I don’t live together anymore because of school/work locations, but before that we grew to like the same types of foods (it also helps that our parents liked similar tastes). However, my parents say that once you are able to get something of better quality than before regularly, then you will never go back to eating stuff of lower quality.

I’m a princess. Phew. Okay, now that I’ve admitted that….. Lol.
Rambo and I eat differently about 90% of the time. I don’t want to say he’s picky, or I’m picky, but a lot of our taste our different. He hates Mexican and Chinese, I thrive off of it. He loves midwestern highly processed foods, I balk at the thought. I make about two-three meals a week we can agree on and the rest of the time I’m cooking solo. I find it kinda makes our grocery budget go up a bit, but I’m working on that. 🙂

My husband and I have WAAY different tastes in food. He’s a red meat & potato guy, while I love pretty much anything, especially seafood and white meats like chicken and pork. We usually have foods that he likes, but sometimes, I’ll make something I like just for fun and make him eat it too.

I’m a princess too, in the same way. I tend to compromise by making things he likes but at my standard of quality and bulking it out w/ a lot of veggies (that generally only I eat more than a bite or two of)– i.e. taco night– with high quality/ small amounts of meat and cheese and a LOT of veggies.

My wife and I are very compatible in our food selections. When we travel, the food is the most important aspect of the experience. We eat mostly chicken, seafood and some vegetarian dishes. We love to experiment with different ethnic dishes at home and when we dine out.

Hubby and I don’t really have the same tastes. I LOVE veggies, and he generally dislikes them. He could live off of meat, potatoes, cheese, and processed stuff, while I much prefer veggies, whole grains, and occasionally meat (and I’m lactose intolerant, boo).
We do eat roughly the same thing most nights, I just cook veggies separately and add them in after he has his portion. We don’t make a lot of time for cooking elaborate meals, though, so it’s generally not an issue.

I got fussier with sushi! Since I went to some of the fancier places, I can’t stomach the cheap stuff any more 🙁

My partner is more into spices (and spicy) than I am. (There, I said it. I like bland food.) It’s actually very easy to accomodate the difference- as he just adds hot sauce to everything once it’s prepared.

We both try to eat as organically and locally as possible. Our compromise is that we often eat very simply -rice, beans, veggies, pasta dishes, etc.

Our point of contention is actually variety – I can eat the same thing every day for a week. And often do. He, on the other hand, cannot eat the same dish for more than two meals before he has to reconstitute the leftovers.

Well, I used to be okay with “quick and easy” foods. Chicken nuggets and chicken patties. Meals made with cans of soup. Pasta and pre-made sauce. But I think in part because my boyfriend isn’t really a fan of the chicken nuggets, or he prefers homemade food more, or maybe just because homemade tends to be better for you/healthier/cheaper than pre-packaged. I still do make the meals with soup, and make the pasta and use premade sauce. But sometimes I’ll saute up a few onions or garlic to add to the sauce, make it a little fancier 🙂

I’m definitely developing some prima-donna tendencies! Cheap red wine, cheap sushi and cheap cheese are big no nos for me. I definitely have my boyfriend to thank for the expensive wine and cheese taste!

Love cooking, but it has to be something special. Following a new recipe and enjoying the results, great feeling. Most aren’t that hard, you just need the time. I try to do a new one every Saturday.
