A few unpopular opinions about money

Unpopular opinions about money

The only people who say ‘money doesn’t matter’ are those who have more than enough – or who will never have any anyway.

There’s nothing attractive about an unemployed partner.

Being able to throw money at a problem is a wonderful thing.

Even with all the money in the world the root cause of the unattractiveness of an unemployed partner is still there.

Why is he unemployed? Money wouldn’t solve anything it would just delay the inevitable.

I had an unemployed partner before and I made enough money and had more than enough for our lifestyle at the time. It ended badly. Didn’t change anything… My money.

What I wanted was a partner who understood equality and that you sometimes have to suck it up and step up to help even if you don’t want to.

    1. Yes.

    2. Hmmm. Yes, but there could be more to the unattractiveness than just unemployment…?

    3. Perhaps — if the problem is still there after the money gets thrown at it, well, what then?

I totally get the difficulty in finding something attractive in a partner who’s on unemployment. I find it’s difficult to find much attractive about a partner on disability who’s a constant financial drain. I love Tim, but sometimes I think about how much more money I’d have without what — in my darker, meaner moments — I consider a financial anchor around my neck.

I’m sorry that the unemployment is a) continuing and b) affecting things so badly.

I agree that people in between “never have enough” and “have plenty” will always think that money matters. Frankly, I’m not convinced the other two subsets truly believe in money’s irrelevance either.

Call me cold, but at the basest level, the reason for unemployment doesn’t matter. It’s so toxic (for me) that it poisons everything. As Abby says, a partner who is a constant financial drain is … exhausting.

Also, I don’t know about others, but my problems are all pretty defined and easily fixed with money. Current/recent examples: car repair bills, short-notice house move, that kind of thing. Other likely examples: dislike cooking/cleaning, all easily outsourced!

A key factor in my agreeing with you is that generally someone who is primarily a financial drain is all kinds of other drain too. They don’t just not bring in income, they’re not doing anything to help make it easier for the breadwinner and it’s frakking exhausting.

I didn’t consider my parents drains because while I was the only one bringing in enough income, they were doing all the cooking, cleaning, putting gas in the car, gardening, packing my lunch, bringing in any bits of saving and income they could find, anything they could do to lighten my load while I did the things they could not. They kept *trying* to make things better, and kept looking for ways to bring in money.

My sibling, however, total waste of space and a drain. Always creating problems, never lending a hand or even pulling his own weight in any other area. He is the classic totally unattractive, even repulsive, potential partner. Unsurprisingly, there’s a tiny part of me who hopes someone wants him and will take him off my hands, even temporarily.

At this point 80% of my problems could be fixed with money. I think that unemployment happens but I need to see that some effort is being expended in trying to: look for employment, create a new skill set, get out of the old career, volunteer, start a small business. SOMETHING, ANYTHING that signals trying. My mom lost her job and was unemployed for many years. However, if looking for a job was a job she rocked it. I have never seen a person work so hard to find work, she also volunteered to help others, and learned new skills. As a result now she has a ton of job offers because of all of that hard work. There is a point when you have to believe what people show you.

I should say she has been employed again for quite awhile now-but she has gotten to this point due to a lot of hard work.

Agreed on all accounts. People make it sound callous to care about money but it’s realistic and pragmatic. Cause even when you’re in love, ya gotta eat.
