The only thing I say different is number 2. We call it a “shopping cart” or a “cart” for short.

    This was fun!

    14. A flying insect that glows in the dark.
A firefly or a lightening bug
    15. The little insect that curls up into a ball.
A potato bug – though apparently a potato bug is actually something much more disgusting. I am thinking of what is actually called a “pill bug” – http://www.highlightskids.com/Science/Stories/SS0498_bugsthatarent.asp

    Also:

    6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof.
    Eavesdrop (we pronounce it “eaves-draw-f”)

14: is a lightning bug!! (firefly also acceptable) You guys don’t have them here. 🙁 I really want to import them, they are adorable and fun to catch (and release) on warm summer nights.

8: Coke (all kinds are just “coke” in my book – when we’d go to restaurants as kids we’d say “I’d like a coke” and the waitress would say: “What kind?” and I would reply: “Dr Pepper”)

    14: lightening bug or firefly

    15: rollypolly

Sorry forgot the other different one:

    2: cart

  • Reply Karen December 21, 2009 at 04:32

    My differences would be:
    3. Lunchbox. Thermos is for drinks.
    4. Frying pan, more commonly just ‘pan’
    7. Porch
    8. Soda usually. Never Coke unless I want a Coca-Cola. And never ever ‘pop’!
    10. Sub or hoagie
    18. Is sometimes also a yard sale
    19. Sometimes supper.

Are jumping jacks ‘star jumps’ for NZ’ers?

@ Karen: ooh yes, you’re right. that should be lunchbox! Haven’t heard porch in a long time – not since living in Malaysia I don’t think. Every (terraced) house on our street had one.

I *love* #8. We call everything “Coke” (even if it’s not) which is boring and confusing.

#14 we call lightening bugs, and #15 we call pill bugs. Everything else is pretty much the same in Austin, TX USA.

You do not want to import fireflies. They are pretty from a distance but up close, no. Thing of the ugliest fly you have ever seen. The firefly would probably beat it.
